Why Do Network Marketers Get Burned Out?

I should have Asked The Right Questions!Burn out in any industry is a real problem and is plentiful in Network Marketing. So in asking the question, Why do network marketers get burned out, one would have to look at the industry as a whole.

Network marketing in total has a rotten reputation and is tainted with all sorts of unscrupulous people. So when anyone decides to join the industry they do so at their own peril. Many join companies unknowingly that have a reputation of changing the rules of the game anytime they want, thus leaving casualties in their wake.

I have been with several companies over the years who have decided to change the rules in the middle of the game thus causing many distributors to lose income. I did not do my due diligence, and got caught up in the changes. Let me set the record straight here, I like network marketing and think its a great business model but many times greed drives owners and voila, you get a mess.

So when an individual joins a company and puts their heart and soul into building their business and that particular company takes a different tack, they lose, and they have to do it all over again. This presents a huge frustration and burn-out.

So how do you make sure that burnout in the network marketing industry won’t happen to you? 

You have to do your due diligence and make sure the particular company that you are looking at doesn’t have a history of making abrupt changes. When you are presented a business opportunity from a network marketing company ask the question, “How many times in the history of the company have they changed the compensation plan?” Don’t take “I don’t know” for an answer.

Your blood, sweat, and many times tears is at stake. Without understanding how many times the potential company has changed their comp plan may cause you severe aggravation down the road. As I said before it has happened to me and many others, only to leave us back at square one, having to do it all over again.

Recently, one of my current network marketing companies that I have been with for over 6 years, put forth a punitive change in their compensation plan. They raised the required CV [Customer Volume] level needed to get paid residual income by more than 100%. By doing this they will have many people not making the requirement and therefore the company will keep the residual income that was supposed to be paid out to the distributor. Moves like this are driven by greed with no concern about the welfare of the distributor.

This particular move will have drastic repercussions to their current distributors that have not worked real hard lately but are drawing their pay checks. The whole reason to build a network marketing business is to have a revenue stream down the road, but if the company is constantly changing the rules there is no protection.

So to eliminate burn out and stress find a company that has not changed the compensation programs in a negative way and maintains consistency with their distributors. Many times changes in the comp plan are for the better but a lot of times they can be costly to the distributor. If a company has a history of raising the requirements then run like hell away from the company.

Many times changes are good only if they are benefiting the distributor and customers, but when they are put in place and it is blatantly obvious that it’s in the companies best interest, its not a good move. I guess the only way to make sure that this has happened is to ask the right questions and keep asking them. Google is a great source for information and when companies make bad changes they eventually end up on google which is kinda like having 60 Minutes knocking at your door.

I recently decided to make my home a smart home but did not have the confidence to use the same company who is monitoring my alarm system. I have heard stories of people paying $5,000 to $10,000 or more when equipping smart homes. I could have gone to a big box store or gone on-line and purchased the equipment but why buy it when it comes in the package. You can get up to $2,000 worth of equipment without paying for it, all you have to do is agree to a 36 month contract. Thats normal in the industry.
  3. When you do it yourself you don’t have strangers in your nome punching holes in your wall. Even if its wifi they many times will install key pads in the wall and run wires unnecessarily. The real kicker is that you want to always get security built into any system. A lot of times the security systems are not home automation system. Simply Safe is just security and they tout no contract but they up sell you to higher contracts.

The Ideal Network Marketing Company

$-2Many people ask me what is the ideal network marketing company to join? The answer, in my opinion is one that has little to no entry fee and exciting as hell.

Just think about it, if people didn’t have to pay to join a network marketing company and they found one that they had great passion for, they would work hard and make money. But what happens is the opposite, people get frustrated and quit and then can’t get their money back.

Let’s explore these two points.

Part One- The ideal Network Marketing Company

  1. Paying money up front only pays the up-line so the company does not have to do it. It’s that simple! But what occurs when this practice happens is that when people are presented a company, they get caught up in the excitement from the person presenting the opportunity, and then they join only to discover later on they don’t like the product or company. They fall out of love with the company then have a bad taste in their mouth because they can’t get their money back.
  2. If they could join a company that does not charge money up front the stigma of shelling out money goes away, and if down the road they don’t like what they are doing they have not laid out any huge amount of money. But, usually when there is no cost to enter it’s easier to present to others and the success rate climbs. When the barriers of entry are removed more people are accepting of the company. You see, most people like the network marketing business model, they just don’t like the cost of entry and all the money they have to spend on auto-ships.

Part Two- The Ideal Network Marketing Company

  1. Find a the best network marketing company to join that you like and can fall in love with. There are so many “Me Too” companies in the network marketing space that a distributor is almost assured of getting some sort of rejection when presenting their products or programs. So find one that you can get excited about and has minimum rejection. When you have passion for your products or company, that serves to override much negativity. Passion is a key ingredient in success! The new wave of companies that are emerging are technology companies which have an exciting following.
  2. Look for a company that is not a knock off from another company and does not have a required auto-ship. The new tech companies don’t have auto-ship but a monthly service fee that is required for the service. But if you still like the vitamin, energy drink, anti-aging, type companies make sure that they have a small or no fee to entry and a minimal auto-ship.

So in conclusion, find a company that has no cost of entry and one that you have a great passion for and you will see incredible success. I know because it worked for me. Are You In, MLM, Network Marketing, or Direct Selling?

Many people in the Network Marketing Business run from the title that defines the industry.

Some call it MLM, some call it Network Marketing, some call it Direct Selling, and many refer to it as a home based business.

I watched a video the other morning that takes these titles to task. Eric Worre put together a great video that addresses these titles, and which one defines us the best.

Many people in our industry have trouble deciding what business they are in, and therefore have trouble explaining it to others. It’s the old saying, “if you don’t know, then others won’t know” what your business is.

There are three descriptions that tend to confuse many, they are MLM, Network Marketing, Direct Selling and the question arises which is it? Eric, address these in the video below, please watch!

I agree with Eric that we are Network Marketing Pro’s and that this industry is one that has great potential, but I also believe that many in our industry are not sure of their definition as to what they really are, which in my opinion limits success.

Deciding whether it’s mlm or network marketing, or direct selling is important in explaining it to others, so they can understand what you do.

Eric goes into all this in a very interesting way and ends with a conclusion as to what we should call ourselves. Once we define ourselves, we are on a better footing to build our business. We have to understand what business we are really in before we can build it properly.

This goes back to planning before joining. I went through the same changes not understanding how to define myself, and until I came to the realization that I was a Network Marketing Pro, I was unable to communicate my business to others clearly. I was unable to put together a definite plan because I didn’t understand what the business was. Once I discovered what the business model was, I was then able to build a plan.

If you define who you are, you will eliminate any failure that might happen by joining the wrong company. I have listened to many a top producer who have boasted about being in 10-12 companies before finding the right one. How expensive is that with time, energy, and money, being spent? If they planned before they joined they might not have suffered lost time. Defining what  industry you are in at the beginning, is a great start.

That is why I consider planning to be the most important ingredient to network marketing  success. I have read lots of network marketing success books and found that the information is written by people who have achieved great success in the business, but what they leave out is how they decided to join their particular company and what preparation they used to determine if they liked the particular company.

Great books can give you many network marketing success tips and if you love the company they are a great resource, but if you don’t like the products their information will never work.
