Are You In, MLM, Network Marketing, or Direct Selling?

Many people in the Network Marketing Business run from the title that defines the industry.

Some call it MLM, some call it Network Marketing, some call it Direct Selling, and many refer to it as a home based business.

I watched a video the other morning that takes these titles to task. Eric Worre put together a great video that addresses these titles, and which one defines us the best.

Many people in our industry have trouble deciding what business they are in, and therefore have trouble explaining it to others. It’s the old saying, “if you don’t know, then others won’t know” what your business is.

There are three descriptions that tend to confuse many, they are MLM, Network Marketing, Direct Selling and the question arises which is it? Eric, address these in the video below, please watch!

I agree with Eric that we are Network Marketing Pro’s and that this industry is one that has great potential, but I also believe that many in our industry are not sure of their definition as to what they really are, which in my opinion limits success.

Deciding whether it’s mlm or network marketing, or direct selling is important in explaining it to others, so they can understand what you do.

Eric goes into all this in a very interesting way and ends with a conclusion as to what we should call ourselves. Once we define ourselves, we are on a better footing to build our business. We have to understand what business we are really in before we can build it properly.

This goes back to planning before joining. I went through the same changes not understanding how to define myself, and until I came to the realization that I was a Network Marketing Pro, I was unable to communicate my business to others clearly. I was unable to put together a definite plan because I didn’t understand what the business was. Once I discovered what the business model was, I was then able to build a plan.

If you define who you are, you will eliminate any failure that might happen by joining the wrong company. I have listened to many a top producer who have boasted about being in 10-12 companies before finding the right one. How expensive is that with time, energy, and money, being spent? If they planned before they joined they might not have suffered lost time. Defining what  industry you are in at the beginning, is a great start.

They are assuming that you already love the company and it’s products. This is a mistake because if you are “not right for the company, the company is not right for you”.

That is why I consider planning to be the most important ingredient to network marketing  success. I have read lots of network marketing success books and found that the information is written by people who have achieved great success in the business, but what they leave out is how they decided to join their particular company and what preparation they used to determine if they liked the particular company.

Great books can give you many network marketing success tips and if you love the company they are a great resource, but if you don’t like the products their information will never work.

How to get prospects in network marketing is no different then how to get prospects in life insurance or any other business, the principals are the same. You even can learn how to get prospects to call you and ask about your business.

Here are 4 tips on how to get prospects:

  1. Make up your mind that you are not going to build a chicken list. In the video I talk about people who make their chicken list, the chickens all come home to roost. Always put your list together with the expectation that the people who you speak with are waiting for your information.

Much is written about the subject of how to find prospects, but it still is a part of the business that sets many people back.

Learning how to prospect is a learned talent for which there are many resources.

Top Pitfalls of Network Marketing are, to some obvious, but to many they are elusive.

Even the top mlm companies in the world have some concern as to why there is such a high turn over in the network marketing industry.

If you are looking to join or have joined a network marketing company you will want to read this first since it could save you lots of money and time.

When people are approached by another to join the best mlm opportunity on the planet, remember that is how they feel at the time. They are all stoked with emotion and then it rubs off on others. So now in the heat of the emotion people join the particular company and are convinced they are going to make millions.

After a few months reality sets in, and the person who emotionally joined their particular company decides that they don’t like the product or the company anymore. Their love affair has faded and the harsh reality is that they wish they had their money back.

Even though there are people all over the internet selling network marketing strategies on how to make your business grow. All the network marketing secrets in the world will not help the person in this position.

At this point in time the “Guild in off the Lilly” so to speak. The person has fallen out of love with the company so at this point one of two things will happen. They will hate network marketing all together or they will go find another company.

What needs to happen is to build a mini network marketing business plan to vet the company they are looking at before they join. There are many areas where you can find planning tools, one of my favorite is the Small Business Administration where you can get tons of information to put together your mini business plan. If you don’t want to use them and put one together I have already taken the important points and put them in the video for you.

Network Marketing is a business and should be treated like any other business. Putting together a business plan before you spend money is the only smart thing to do. This is the main reasons why people fail in the business. If they would take the short time to see if the particular company is right for them or not they would save time and money.

The Companies should take heed and vet their future distributors also but the money grab is so strong that I really don’t think that will ever happen. But on the other hand there are many companies that have fabulous training programs in place to guide their distributors to success if they would follow them.

Here’s the kicker, most companies are awful in business retention. When a distributor starts to drop off they don’t reach out and try to life them up. If a company charges an annual fee and they shared it with the distributors the retention might go up, if they don’t have a fee they can see when the product purchases stop or slow down and they should reach out to the distributor.

But, for our discussion make sure that the company is right for you before you join. Look at it this way, when you are looking for a job would you take anyone? No! so why just join any company without checking them out.

5 Top Essential Tips For Network Marketing Success

5 Top Essential Network Mkg tips copyThe 5 top essential tips for network marketing  in my opinion might not match with what other leaders might say. 

Here is the straight scoop! Most experts look at the top tips that are important to begin after you have paid your money and joined a company.

You will never achieve network marketing success unless you put into motion the principals before you decide to join. Do not spend any money joining a company before reading this article.

You can be in the best network marketing opportunity that has the highest mlm ranking but if you don’t utilize proper strategies from the beginning you will never see success.

So lets start with the question, what is network marketing? It’s a business just like any other business so it must be treated as such. No one lays out money for a business with out having it thought out clearly from the start.

  1. First Tip is to make sure that you understand the industry and how it works. Never jump in unless you have a through understanding as to how the industry works. This means pay plans, up-uplines, and the types of different companies. Don’t get caught up in the emotion of someone else when they are presenting their deal to you.
  2. Second Tip is to vet the person who is presenting the particular opportunity to you. What is their network marketing success and what is their stature in the industry. After all you are planning on joining a company because you want financial independence, right? Does the person who is talking to you have financial independence or are they like you looking to get ahead? Ask the questions, and if anyone finds the questions offensive thats tough!
  3. Third Tip, before you spend any money build a business plan. I have put together a short video that you can use to learn how to build a Mini Network Marketing Business Plan.   4. Fourth Tip, once you have narrowed down the company make sure they don’t have a history of changing compensation plans on the distributors. Ask the person that is recruiting you if they have ever changed the plans and if they don’t know as the company. Their is nothing wrong with doing your due diligence before you join and if anyone objects to it that should give you some insight into the management of the company.
  5. Fifth and Final Tip is to always make sure that before you spend a dime you have a love affair with the company and products. This is one of the biggest problems in achieving Network Marketing success with any of the companies and the reason for a lot of peoples failure. They get caught up in the emotion of the moment, which sometimes can carry for weeks, only to discover they don’t like the products or they don’t like the company. Now its too late! Money has been spent with no way to get it back.

A Bonus Tip… There is a new trend in the industry and there are some that have been around for a while that don’t charge up from to join or if they do it’s minimal. What they do charge is for products and they try to get you to purchase a big package. What they don’t tell you is that there is usually a 90 day or longer period where they will let you step up and purchase the big package if you wish after you decide you like the company. You are probably not told this because the distributor bringing you in wants to get paid.

Up front money pays the up-line, its no secret.

A Shocking Truth About Network Marketing

Without A Plan, Where Is The Destination?

One of the shocking truths in any business, whether it be a regular Businesses or a Network Marketing Home Business, is that most are entered into without a business plan.

When a plan is not created the chance of  succeeding is minimal. But, It does not have to be this way!

It is not hard to build a business plan before you start a business and if you do you might discover that the company you are considering to join might not be the right one.

Many times people will join a company because they get caught up in the enthusiasm of the person presenting the business opportunity to them, finding out later that it was not such a good idea. “I know it has happened to me”! I have done it both ways, joined with out a plan and with one. When I joined with one it worked!

You see everything in your mind is a perfect world. There are no inefficiencies in your mind, everything is perfect. You only see the positive outcomes and rarely see anything negative. So when you pay your $500 join your business you have no idea where you are going or what the outcome will be. You are expecting everything to be as you envisioned in your mind.

Remember, If you are joining a Network Marketing Company to make extra money, chances are the person who brought you or is bringing you into the Company doesn’t have a business plan either. 

After you join the particular company the harsh reality sets in that maybe you don’t like the particular business, or you don’t like the particular product even though you try to fall in love with the products/company but couldn’t.

You see many times people are approached by a friend to sign up with a Network Marketing Company and they might not be totally in love with the product or company but they try to “Fall In Love” with it for what ever reason. When that doesn’t work they quit and that gives a bad taste in peoples mouth about Network Marketing.

The same occurs with a off-line business, after a while you fail because you had no plan and all your investment is gone.

  1. The plan will expose whether you like the product or not.
  2. The plan will expose whether you like the company or not.
  3. The plan will give you a solid track to follow showing success on paper first.
  4. The plan will give you a idea whether you want to spend the money to join the particular company or whether to spend money to start your off-line business.

There are many places to get the planning tools needed to determine whether you are doing the right business and putting together a good plan to follow when you execute you business. I have put together a list of places to go to get the tools without spending any money.

Write Your Business Plan: Get Your Plan in Place and Your Business off the Ground 

This book can be used for Network Marketing of Off-line Business. Business plans don’t have to be complicated, you can write them out on a napkin if you wish but having the knowledge of how to do it can be vital. You can even get to the point where you can run a visual model in you mind that will give you insight as to whether you should pursue the business or not.

I would get many business ideas cross my desk and I could look at them and tell whether they were worth my time or not. You can get to that point.

In conclusion, please, please, please, learn how to put together a mini Network Marketing Business Plan and use it before you join any company. It will eliminate failure and put you on a positive path to success.
